Steel, titanium, gold and bronze change more than colour; a black coating is a different kind of choice.

Choose a case colour for the composition, but separate that choice from what a real case is made of. Two equally silver watches can differ in mass, alloy, surface treatment and maintenance needs. A photograph cannot settle those specifications.

The metal underneath

Stainless steel is a family of alloys. A manufacturer's named alloy should not be silently applied to every steel watch: Rolex identifies its own Oystersteel separately from its gold and titanium alloys. Titanium is commonly chosen where lower mass matters; Rolex's particular grade-5 RLX titanium is lighter than steel. That does not establish the grade, hardness or weight of every titanium case. Yellow and rose gold are alloy colours, not surface finishes. Changing the added metals changes the hue; Rolex describes silver, copper, platinum and palladium among the constituents used for its different 18-carat gold alloys. Bronze introduces change over time. Tudor's aluminium-rich bronze develops a patina influenced by wear and environment. That is a particular alloy's behaviour, not a promise that every bronze watch ages identically. Tudor on bronze.

Black is not another alloy

DLC means diamond-like carbon. Citizen uses it as a coating within its Duratect treatments. Coating performance depends on the complete treatment and substrate; black colour alone cannot establish scratch resistance. Citizen surface technology.

In the atelier

The six options are appearance families. Black DLC represents coated metal; the builder does not specify its substrate. Bezel metal can match the case or provide contrast. These are graphic colours and reflectance settings, not material simulation, precious-metal certification, measured weight, allergy guidance or simulated patina. Compare the separate surface finishes before judging a metal by brightness alone.

Rugged LCD separates its protective shell from the metal chassis and hardware. Its resin shell colours do not make the internal chassis, bracelet or buckle plastic; a steel shell is another explicit construction choice. Neither shell receives a borrowed manufacturer's water or impact rating. Digital faceplate colour is also independent of the screen's polarity or LED segment colour.
