The Tourbillon
A rotating regulator is different from an exposed balance—and is not an Atelier option.
A tourbillon is a rotating regulating assembly, not simply a hole in the dial showing moving parts. That distinction is useful when looking at both real watches and digital watch illustrations.
What rotates
Breguet explains the original idea as placing the escapement and balance in a mobile cage. Its rotation distributes rate variations associated with vertical positions instead of leaving the regulating organ in one orientation. The historical problem concerned the regularity of pocket watches in vertical positions. It should not be reduced to a promise that a modern watch with a tourbillon is automatically more accurate than every watch without one.
An opening is not a complication
An open-heart dial exposes part of the existing mechanism. A skeletonized construction removes material to reveal more of it. Neither description, on its own, says that a regulator cage rotates.
Look for what actually moves and what supports it. A balance oscillating back and forth is doing its ordinary regulating job; it is not proof of a tourbillon.
In the atelier
