Seconds hands and layouts

Separate the pointer's shape and colour from its location, motion and relationship to a chronograph.

The seconds hand gives a dial its most obvious motion. Moving it from the centre into a small register changes the balance of the face, but on a physical watch that position follows the mechanism. It is not simply a graphic that can be moved anywhere without changing the construction.

Layout before decoration

Central seconds shares the main axis with the hour and minute hands. Small seconds has its own display; no seconds removes the visible indication, not necessarily the underlying mechanism. A chronograph adds another distinction: its central timing hand can serve elapsed seconds while a subsidiary hand continues to show ordinary running seconds. Shape does not determine motion

A stick is a narrow pointer; a lollipop adds a circular feature; an arrow gives the tip extra emphasis. Colour can make the moving hand easy to locate without changing its function. Do not infer the movement from the silhouette: Mondaine's stop2go uses a distinctive red pointer with a pause at twelve, while Seiko describes Spring Drive's continuous glide. In the atelier

Individual hands & seconds exposes only the layouts supported by the selected movement configuration. Stick, lollipop and arrow change the rendered pointer; colour changes its appearance. The simulated sweep follows the configured movement behaviour and screen updates, not a physical escapement or an accuracy test. Choosing a blue seconds hand does not thermally blue steel, and a lollipop does not automatically add a working luminous spot. Compare the indication at normal size: a detail attractive in close-up may be barely visible across a whole watch.
