ETA 6498-1
A large manual-winding movement that makes small seconds—and the absence of a rotor—part of the design.
The ETA 6498-1 takes a different approach from a small automatic calibre. It is manually wound, with hours, minutes and a separate seconds display. ETA describes it as a hunter-layout movement with the crown at 3 o'clock; the conventional wristwatch arrangement puts its small seconds at 6. ETA 6498-1 description.
Two numbers, not a contradiction
ETA's May 2025 technical communication distinguishes a 46-hour minimum reserve from a 52-hour typical reserve. The Atelier uses the minimum reference. Neither is a guarantee that a partly wound watch will run that long. Its 18,000 vibrations per hour correspond to five beats each second—slower than the eight beats of a 4 Hz calibre. Manual winding also means no automatic rotor covering the movement. This can make the rear architecture easier to see, but an unobstructed view is not itself evidence of better finishing or greater accuracy. For a real watch, follow its maker's winding instructions rather than treating a rendered crown as a tutorial.
In the atelier
Choose this calibre to explore a hand-wound composition with small seconds at 6 and no date. It is distinct from hiding a central seconds hand on an automatic watch: the display location and winding family are different.
The rear graphic omits an automatic rotor, but does not reproduce every wheel, bridge, screw or dimensional interface of an ETA movement. Its 36.60 mm reference diameter is retained rather than capped: Round large is its admitted case variant in this catalogue. The source distinguishes that casing diameter from a 37.20 mm front flange, nominally 0.50 mm deep. The flange has its own clearance above a separate holder supporting the casing body; it is not an excuse to enlarge the whole movement or thin its full-depth support. ETA casing section, page 7.
The published 4.50 mm movement height is reserved independently from the decorative rear relief and the hand stack. Front skeletons remain original interpretations, not exact ETA openworking or components stretched to fill a smaller case.
