Rectangular and Square Cases

Straight sides give a watch a different visual rhythm from a circle. A rectangle draws the eye between the straps; a square gives the four sides more equal weight. Rounded corners soften either outline without automatically turning it into a cushion case.

Compare the right measurements

Cartier's Tank Must is a useful rectangular reference, with its dial framed by long side rails. The word Tank identifies a design family, not a separate mathematical shape that requires another category beside Rectangle. Cartier Tank Must.

Jaeger-LeCoultre explicitly gives the cited Reverso's 40.1 mm length as lug-to-lug, beside a 24.4 mm width. Do not divide those figures and assume the resulting ratio describes the case body alone. Square cases need not share the same aperture. The TAG Heuer Monaco has a shaped crystal and dial, while Bell & Ross frames a circular opening inside its square BR 03. These are distinct precedents rather than evidence that one outline dictates every internal component. Monaco, BR 03.

In the atelier

Rectangle and Square are original families with shape-matched apertures, not reproductions of those watches. Rectangle includes the Tank-like category; it does not reverse. Square gives more room to the corners, but that is not permission to fit any movement.

The chosen case size fixes the body and attachment width. An incompatible movement, hand sweep or display is rejected rather than squeezed into place. Analog hands remain rigid and rotate around one fixed axis. A digital module keeps its rectangular screen within the shaped faceplate; its digits are never stretched to fill the case. Compare the front and side views before choosing a strap: the same width can feel visually very different beside long rails or broad square shoulders.
