Dial signatures and inscriptions

A signature changes the identity of a dial with very little material. It can identify a maker, mark a commission or carry a personal dedication. Keeping it short also leaves more room for the hands, numerals and the dial surface itself.

Identity and evidence

Personalised dial text has real watchmaking precedents. Atelier de Chronométrie documents four watches for four brothers whose dials carry a family name and birthplace. That is an identity choice, unlike a performance mark. Atelier de Chronométrie's commissioned dials.

COSC chronometer wording refers to actual testing and certification of an identified movement, not a typeface or a preset. Oris describes the certificate and identifying numbers issued after the testing process. Oris on chronometer certification.

Likewise, a depth inscription belongs with a real watch's specified water resistance and instructions. Choosing the wording

Try one short line first. Then add a second only if it contributes something different: a dedication, place or date rather than another competing headline. An unsigned dial is a valid design choice, especially with a visually active surface. Inspect the text at normal viewing size as well as Detail zoom.

In the atelier

The starting signature is THE WATCH PROJECT. Personalize separates the watch name, dial signature and optional second line; blank signatures remain blank. Some complications and open layouts leave room for only one line. Chronometer and depth wording are decorative studies, never certification or a pressure rating. Saving, sharing and randomising preserve your chosen identity; exporting an image does not create a manufacturer's document.

Character limits are not guarantees that every inscription fits every face. The fixed-size layout checks the actual uppercase lettering, including characters that expand when uppercased. An incompatible inscription or case change is rejected; the builder does not truncate your text or shrink it until unreadable. Digital signatures sit on the faceplate outside the screen, with no analog custom second line. A blank or whitespace-only signature stays visually blank.
